You want it to look good. You want it to function better than what you have now. You want to make choices you’re still going to like years from now. And you probably don’t want to spend more just for the sake of spending more.

There is a little longer lead time, but you’re getting more choices, more flexibility, and some features that can make a real difference in how your kitchen works every day.
So What Do You Get With River Run?
The first thing is more selection.
River Run has a nice assortment of door styles and colors, including some really beautiful painted finishes. You also have more flexibility with certain cabinet sizes, including modifications to height, depth and width.
That can be especially helpful in Wisconsin homes where the kitchen doesn’t always fit a perfectly standard layout.
If you’re remodeling an older home in Waukesha, West Allis, Brookfield, New Berlin or the Milwaukee area, you may already know what I mean.
Maybe you’re working around an existing window. Maybe one wall is a little awkward. Maybe the refrigerator is staying. Maybe you don’t want to move plumbing or tear everything down to the studs.
Being able to adjust a cabinet size can sometimes help us make the space work better without turning the whole project into something much bigger.
Not Everyone Needs Fully Custom Cabinets
This is something I tell customers all the time.
Not everybody needs fully custom cabinetry.
If an entry-level cabinet gives you everything you need, great. There’s no reason to spend more just because you can.
But if you start looking at the more basic options and thinking, “I just wish I had a few more colors,” or “I really want this cabinet to be a different size,” or “I need better storage inside,” then River Run is usually where the conversation starts to change.
It gives you more flexibility without automatically moving into a completely different price category.
For a lot of homeowners, that’s the sweet spot.
Start With What You Don’t Like About Your Kitchen Now
When people come into the showroom, they usually start by looking at colors and door styles.
And that’s fun.
But one of the most helpful things you can do before choosing cabinets is think about what actually bothers you in your current kitchen.
Is your trash can sitting out?
Are pots and pans stacked on top of each other?
Do you have a cabinet where things disappear into the back?
Are your countertops always covered because you don’t have enough usable storage?
Those are the things we want to know.
A kitchen remodel should fix some of those everyday annoyances, not just change the color of the cabinets.
The Blind Corner Problem
This is one of my favorite examples because almost everyone knows what I’m talking about.
You open the corner cabinet, put something in the back, and six months later you discover three containers and a lid you forgot you owned.
That’s a blind corner.
And there are much better ways to handle it.
River Run offers corner storage options, including rotating wooden trays that work like a Lazy Susan.
You can still rotate everything around, but instead of reaching into a deep corner, the things you need come toward you.
It’s a fairly simple upgrade, but it can make a big difference.
This is one of those places where spending a little more can actually be worth it because you’re fixing something that probably frustrated you for years.
Trash Pull-Outs and Roll-Outs Are Worth Looking At
Another thing River Run does well is interior storage.
Trash pull-outs are one of the most requested features we see because they get the garbage and recycling out of sight and free up floor space.
Roll-outs inside cabinets can also make deeper cabinets much easier to use.
Instead of crouching down and trying to find what’s hiding in the back, you pull the tray toward you.
These are not necessarily the flashy things you notice in a kitchen photo, but they’re often the things homeowners appreciate the most once they’re living in the space.
Want Green or Blue Cabinets Without Going Fully Custom?
One of my favorite things about River Run is the painted finishes.
We have a lot more homeowners coming in asking about green or blue cabinetry.
Sometimes they want color throughout the kitchen. Other times they just want it on the island, in a beverage area, or on a bathroom vanity.
River Run gives you the opportunity to bring in some of those colors without necessarily having to go into a high-end custom cabinet line.
That can be a really nice option if you want your kitchen to feel a little more personal but you’re still trying to keep the overall project reasonable.
And you don’t have to make every cabinet the same.
A neutral cabinet around the perimeter with a green or blue island can give you some color without feeling like too much.
A Simple Cabinet Shopping Guide
You do not need to walk into a showroom knowing exactly what you want.
Actually, most people don’t.
But there are a few things that make the process a lot easier.
1. Bring Pictures of Your Current Kitchen
Take pictures from a few different angles.
Show us the whole room, but also show us the areas you don’t like.
If there’s a weird corner, a cabinet you never use, or a space that feels wasted, take a picture of it.
2. Bring Rough Measurements
They do not have to be perfect for the first conversation.
Basic wall measurements, ceiling height, windows and appliance locations can help us understand what we’re working with.
3. Bring Inspiration Photos
If you’ve been saving kitchens online, bring those too.
You don’t need to know why you like them.
Sometimes a few pictures tell us right away whether you’re leaning more modern, traditional, transitional, warm, colorful or neutral.
4. Think About What You Want to Hide
This is one people don’t always think about.
What do you want off the counter?
The toaster?
Coffee maker?
Trash?
Paper towels?
Pet food?
Small appliances?
That can help us plan the storage around your actual life instead of just filling the walls with cabinets.
5. Be Upfront About Your Budget
This makes the process much easier.
If we know roughly where you want to stay, we can help you compare the cabinet lines that make sense for your project instead of showing you things that are never going to fit.
The goal isn’t to push you toward the most expensive option.
The goal is to figure out where spending a little more gives you something you’ll actually use.
Hardware Can Completely Change the Look
Once you start narrowing down the cabinet, hardware is another area where people can get overwhelmed pretty quickly.
We offer hardware from Jeffrey Alexander, Berenson and Hardware Resources, and their catalogs are huge.
You can go from something very clean and modern all the way to a crystal knob or something much more traditional.
That’s why I like having customers look at hardware next to the actual cabinet door.
A pull that looks perfect online may look completely different once you put it against the cabinet color and countertop.
And sometimes the hardware is what brings the whole room together.
A more modern pull can make a traditional cabinet feel updated. A crystal knob can be beautiful in a powder room or bathroom vanity. A simple classic style can help keep a kitchen from feeling too trendy.
There really is no one right answer.
When Does River Run Make Sense?
River Run is worth looking at if you want:
- More cabinet colors and door styles
- Painted green or blue cabinet options
- Some flexibility in cabinet height, width or depth
- Trash pull-outs
- Interior roll-outs
- Better corner cabinet storage
- More options without going fully custom
It can be a very practical step up if a basic cabinet line feels too limiting, but you still want to be thoughtful about the budget.
Spend More Where It Makes a Difference
This is really how I encourage people to think about a kitchen remodel.
You do not need to upgrade everything.
Sometimes it makes more sense to put the money into the things that improve how you use the room every day.
Maybe that’s a better corner cabinet.
Maybe it’s a trash pull-out.
Maybe it’s getting the exact blue cabinet you’ve been wanting.
Maybe it’s modifying one cabinet so the whole wall lays out better.
Those are the kinds of choices that can make the kitchen feel like it was actually designed for you.
